Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree, and it is certainly one of the most fascinating materials. For nearly 3,000 years, the cultivation of cork oak trees has proven to be one of our planet's most sustainable and environmentally responsible types of farming.

Harvesting the cork doesn’t harm the tree itself, because only the bark is extracted. It regrows within a couple years and can then be harvested again.
Cork forests support high levels of biodiversity and foster a great diversity of plants and endangered species. Its growth reduces up to two times the amount of CO2 compared to other trees. Besides, it offers fair remuneration and a high employment rate to farmers and workers. Cork is reusable, fire and water resistant, insulating and biodegradable.
For our bags we only use the highest quality cork available. This 'cork leather' gives ono bags a unique flexibility and softness. Our combination of cork and tencel© is the only of its kind worldwide.
Tencel© or lyocell is an incredibly strong and functional fibre made from wood pulp of mostly eucalyptus trees. The trees are grown in sustainable forest plantations and since the forestland is not suitable for agriculture it does not compete with food production.

The tencel© we use is certified by the European eco-label OEKO-TEX®. The material is soft, light, absorbent, durable, breathable and antibacterial. The tencel© fibre production itself is eco-friendly through an innovative closed-loop process using a non-toxic solvent.
The cultivation of the eucalyptus trees is very efficient and does not need additional water irrigation. Compared to other plants, the extracted amount per unit of land is extraordinarily high.
Apart from all these advantages, it is fully biodegradable, and simply one of the most sustainable natural fibres available. We use tencel as backing material for the cork, which gives our bags their flexible structure.
Bamboo is simply stunning. Bamboo is a grass, which can grow in most climates and environments without the application of chemicals and pesticides. Through its growth it reduces five times more CO2 than comparable plants and can be re-harvested continually without damaging the surrounding environment. It is capable of growing up to one meter a day, so you can literally watch it grow!

The material is antibacterial, highly absorbent, hypo allergenic, compostable and incredibly comfortable to wear. To assure the highest possible standards for both, humans and nature, we exclusively use natural bamboo for the lining of our bags. By using bamboo we create highly functional and comfortable products, whilst simultaneously helping to save rainforests, eliminating waste, and lowering carbon emissions - all at once!
Organic cotton is produced from non genetically modified plants, that are grown without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides. The eco-friendly processing does not compromise the workers’ health, which is a widespread problem in the production of non-organic cotton.

It helps to reduce the use of water and electricity and significantly assists in minimizing toxic runoff. Especially people with allergies and chemical sensitivity benefit from using organic cotton, as conventional cotton may retain harmful toxic residues. But even if you don't have sensitive skin, organic cotton is healthier and just feels better on the skin.
Unlike most businesses in the fashion industry, all our sewing threads are made from organic cotton making them biodegradable. Most of the sewing threads used in accessories and clothes today are made from polyester or other synthetic fibres. Choosing only natural materials, we apply this ideal for our thread too, which is naturally dyed with dye made from plant matter.
To produce responsibly and sustainably, we decided to use reclaimed teak for our buttons. We only use wooden structures that are waste materials from the manufacturing process of furniture or other things.

The reclaimed wood would not have any purpose, mainly due to its size. Still it’s perfectly usable for small pieces, like buttons.
Each of ono’s buttons is cut carefully out of an wooden structure of a high quality and beautiful teak wood piece – matching the design of our logo. Each individual piece is chosen and manufactured with care and lots of love for detail.
Teak itself is a fast-growing tree cultivated in Indonesia, where we manufacture our products. Being grown on plantations, it is considered as a renewable resource. The wood is not only beautiful, but also highly durable and water resistant.
